Aspirin can be both beneficial as well as risky.

For a very long-time aspirin was used to relieve pain or inflammatory. But nowadays, doctors recommend aspirin to patients who have suffered heart attacks or strokes. There are certain precautions that one needs to take care while consuming aspirin. You should not start daily aspirin therapy on your own without recommending to your doctor. Consuming aspirin occasionally or two is safe for most adults to get rid of headaches, body aches or fever. Sometimes aspirin can lead to internal bleeding if it does not suit oneself.

Why do people consume aspirin?

Many people consume aspirin a day as per prescribed or recommended by the family doctor. There are people who take aspirin to prevent themselves from various diseases like heart disease, heart attack, or a stroke. People who have already suffered from a heart attack or have experienced certain kind of strokes or have been diagnosed by any heart disease take aspirin to keep them away from another heart attack or stroke.

How does aspirin work?
Aspirin keeps away blood cells from clumping together. These clumps, also known as clots, can block blood vessels in the heart and the brain. When these vessels are blocked, nutrients and oxygen cannot reach parts of the heart or brain. The lack of blood to areas of the heart is the main cause of heart attack or heart strokes.

Is there any risk associated with the consumption of aspirin?

The major side effect of aspirin is that it can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach, small intestine, and brain. There is a layer that protects the insides of the stomach and intestine from the acid in your stomach. If aspirin is taken at high doses and for a long time, it can slowly damage this layer. This damage can lead to bleeding. Using aspirin to prevent blood clots can also affect the natural healing of damaged blood vessels and increase the risk of bleeding in the brain.

Does the risk of heart disease outweigh the risk of bleeding?

People who had already had a heart attack or stroke faces such problem. These also affect to those who are suffering from heart disease, or who have diabetes, according to the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Diabetes Association.

If you have heart disease or diabetes or have had a heart attack or stroke, your doctor may have already told you to take aspirin. But if you smoke, have high cholesterol, or have a strong family history of heart disease, it is important to discuss other options with your doctor.

Consult doctor for further questions

If you have further query about the consumption of aspirin, consult a doctor. Do not start or stop to take the medicine without the prescription of the doctor. If consumed in wrong amount, it can lead to internal bleeding.
