A Mumbai boy has his heart on the right side! Undergoes surgery for a hole in it

We’ve been studying it all the while that a human heart is situated at the left side of the chest. But what this boy has defies the logic of medical science. Sanket, a six-year-old boy has his heart chambers and arteries on the right side of the chest.

Recently, he underwent a complex surgery in a Charni road hospital to seal a hole in his heart and also his pulmonary artery was narrow. The doctors have put an artificial tube from the left chamber of the heart to carry the blood to lungs.

Sanket is a boy from Aurangabad, who is a farmer’s son. He was diagnosed with a complex heart defect, in which all of his arteries and chambers are interchanged. He also had a hole in his organ and a narrow pulomonary artery which restricted the flow of impure blood to the lungs.

To make the situation worse, Sanket’s  heart is situated on his left and due to the interposition of arteries, the common correction surgery couldn’t be performed on the child.

The team that consisted of a cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, anaesthetist and an intensivist decided to take this complex task in their hands. After the surgery, Sanket was plugged off the ventilator and he was able to eat his food orally.

The case throws light on the dedication and meticulous planning of the team, as well as the perfect execution in the post-operative period. Now, Sanket can lead a life normally like any other kid of his age with his nearly-normal heart.
