Caution people, especially older adults. If you want to cut down the risk of dementia, then consume orange, grapefruit daily. A new study has shed light on the fact that orange and grapefruit can cut the risk of dementia by 23%. Researchers from Tohuku University in Japan has found out that daily consumption of citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons or limes can reduce the chances of developing this neurodegenerative brain disorder by almost a quarter.

The findings have confirmed that citric acids contain a chemical called nobiletin which have found to slow down the impairment of memory in animal testing. The team closely observed more than 13,000 older adults for seven years to see how many of them developed dementia. The results suggest that people who daily consume the citrus fruits are 23 per cent less likely to have dementia than those who eat them less than twice a week. There are few health campaigns to raise awareness about this brain disorder. And so, the number might increase from 8,00,000 to 1.9 million in the coming years.

New cases of dementia are actually falling in Britain, at a rate of over 2 percent a year.Rates of dementia among those eating citrus fruits at least once a day were significantly lower than in volunteers having them less than twice a week.

"Some biological studies have indicated citrus may have preventive effects against cognitive impairment," the researchers stated.

"But no study has examined the relation between citrus consumption and rates of dementia. Our findings suggest frequent consumption is linked with a lower risk of dementia," they concluded.

The exact relation between the citrus fruits and dementia has not been established yet. The findings of the study suggest that frequent consumption of citrus fruits is associated with a lower risk of dementia. The study is published in journal of Nutrition.
