Lucknow: Blood tests are usually frowned upon by many as they involve a man going through a painful ordeal of the pin prick. Perhaps, it is one phobia that cuts across age, caste, community and class. If you happen to be one of those who fear the needle, students from Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University may just have the healing touch.
These students have developed a unique prototype using electric properties of the blood cells which will make the process of counting RBC (Red Blood Cells) and WBC (White Blood Cells) without a needle prick.
According to the students, this will be the first time when the blood test will be conducted without a needle prick. The innovative model will work by using a laser when placed on veins.
It took four months to develop this unique model by the four B Tech students Rohan Maheshwari, Simran Kaur, Somya Agarwal and Vani Dayal Sharma.
“Once the data is collected it will be transferred to software that analyses and compares the blood cell count with the standard data. Using the concept of cloud computing, the software will send a text message to the patient’s phone. If it detects some considerable deviation, the doctor concerned will receive the acquired data. The doctor will be able to treat the patient from home and notify the pharmacy about the prescribed medicines that have to be delivered to the patient’s home,” said Rohan Maheshwari, giving a detailed account of the innovative model.
Their digital solution for blood test also won these aspiring students prize money of Rs 10 lakh at the GE Edison Challenge 2016.
Student pursuing computer engineering said, “The competition was tough because the second engineering students competed with India’s finest technical minds. We also got the opportunity to prove our mettle before senior scientists and engineers from GE, as well as innovation leaders from the industry”
During their research they also went to paediatricians and pathology labs in search of the patients for blood test.
After winning the competition the students are ready to make execution of their concept.
The winners also got an opportunity to visit GE experts at GE John F Welch Technology Centre in Bengaluru to explore their R&D department. There they interacted with the experts by attending the workshop during their visit.
