The government mandated ads to discourage smoking by highlighting health risks involved in it may or may not bring adequate results but there is one thing that is bound to draw every man's attention i.e. impotency.
Cigarrate smoking is widely considered as one of the major reasons of erectile dysfunction.
It is not surprising as smoking can damage your blood vessels, and ED is often a result of poor arterial blood supply to the penis.
An independent study by Journal of Urology in February 1992, which grouped impotent smokers depending upon the no. of cigarettes they smoked each day, found following results:
* The study concluded heavy smokers (40+ cigarettes/day) had the "softest" night-time erections;
* smoking was related to an abnormal decline of blood pressure in the penis.
Another study in United States conducted by the Journal of Urology in January 1994, healthy men who smoked,with no history of impotence, heart disease or diabetes, were interviewed twice over 8 years.
Long-term smoking causes more physiological damage.
The second interview revealed that although these men still had no heart disease or diabetes,they were twice as likely to experience moderate or severe impotence.
A 2005 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests that ED is not only more likely among men who smoked compared to those who never did, but that in younger men with ED, cigarette smoking is very likely the cause of their impotence.
Men who smoke may have reduced semen volume and sperm count and more abnormal sperm compared to non or exsmokers. Toxins found in tobacco smoke, such as cadmium, nicotine, lead and radioactive elements may be directly toxic as they circulate in the blood and reach the testes.Those chemicals can also harm your heart, brain, kidneys, and various other tissues throughout the body.
An erection results when the arteries in the penis expand and fill with blood after receiving signals from nerves in the penis. The nerves are responding to sexual arousal signals from the brain. Even if the nervous system is operating at full strength, an erection might not be physically possible if the blood vessels are unhealthy due to smoking.
If you are a heavy smoker, research suggests the odds of developing ED are much higher. However, quitting smoking can improve ED symptoms.
According to the National Institute of Health (US) (Jan 2016), only 10 to 20 percent of all cases can be blamed on psychological factors like depression, anxiety, guilt, hostility While the leading cause of impotency among Amrican Men can be attributed to Prescription drugs (one fourth).
