Karnataka: In an unfortunate incident, four women drowned after the car they were travelling in fell into Visvesvaraya Canal in the Mandya district of Karnataka. According to the police, it seems like the driver of the car might have lost control and accidentally rammed into a temporary ironclad wall of the canal, following which it fell into the canal. All four women died during the incident and the driver survived as he managed to swim to the bank.
Driver admitted to hospital
The incident occurred near Gamanahalli in Srirangapatna taluk of the district on Saturday night. The deceased have been identified as Mahadevamma and her relatives Sanjana, Maadevi and Rekha. Manoj, the driver has been admitted to hospital.
Ex-gratia announced
Following the incident, Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy and Social Welfare Minister H C Mahadevappa met the family members of the deceased and tried to console them. Mahadevappa said Rs 2 lakh compensation will be given as ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased.
The police informed that the car was on its way to Doddamulgoodu from Gamanahalli. The bodies of all deceased have been fished out from the canal and a case has also been registered. Moreover, an investigation is also underway.
