In a mind-boggling incident, doctors recently operated on a woman with a bulging growth on her scalp filled with numerous marble-like-white globules in Bengaluru.
The unusual case was treated by doctors at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences and detailed in the journal Radiology.
According to the doctors, the growth was 'painless' while it is still not clear why she waited so long to get it treated.
The 52-year-old woman told doctors that the growth had been developing on her head since childhood. The sack-like growth had swelled to nearly 6 inches long, 4 inches wide and nearly 5 inches tall. The MRI scan revealed that the cyst on the back of her head like a fleshy hair bun.
According to Cleveland Clinic, these masses are known as dermoid cysts. According to experts, these balls often develop in the head and neck. It may also present in the patient’s ovaries, spine or other parts of the body.
These cysts are non-cancerous and they develop from embryonic cells and contain hair, fluid, teeth or skin glands. It is still not known why this phenomenon occurs.
It is still unclear why these congenital orbs sprout, however, according to the doctors they are usually harmless and painless. However, the gumballs can cause complications ranging from infections and damage to nearby bones.
