Karnataka Assembly elections: Ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the poll-bound state as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leaving no stone unturned to regain power in the southern state.

Addressing a rally in Belgavi on Thursday, March 16, the Assam CM said that he intends to close "all madrassas" as he wants schools and universities in "new India." "People from Bangladesh come to Assam & create a threat to our civilization & culture. I have closed 600 madrassas & I intend to close all madrassas because we do not want madrassas. We want schools, colleges & universities," he Sarma added.

To establish a secular education system, the Assam government resolved in 2020 to shut down all government-run madrassas and convert them into general educational institutions. The state Assembly then passed the Assam Repealing Act, 2020, and the governor signed it into law on January 27, 2021.

India needs a person who can proudly say I am a Hindu: Assam CM

Speaking further during the rally, Sarma said India needs a person today who can proudly say that he is a Hindu.

"There are many people in our country who proudly say they are Muslim, Christian and I have no problem with that but we need a person who can proudly say that I am a Hindu. India needs such a person today," he added.
