The BJP filed a complaint with the Election Commission on Monday in response to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's use of the term "sovereignty" for Karnataka during the state election campaign.

Concerning the matter, a BJP delegation led by Union minister Bhupender Yadav addressed a memorandum to the poll watchdog.

"Karnataka is a very important member state in the Union of India and any call to protect the sovereignty of a member state of the Union of India amounts to a call for secession and is fraught with perilous and pernicious consequences," the party said.

Party leader Tarun Chugh told reporters that the Congress party should be derecognised, citing the Representation of the People Act.

The BJP likewise presented a copy of the Congress tweet citing Gandhi on the issue.

The opposition party had tweeted, "CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: 'The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's reputation, sovereignty or integrity'".

The election schedule for the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly was announced by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on March 29. On May 10, the state will go to the polls, and on May 13, the votes will be counted.

The date for voting in the elections for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly is May 10, and the results will be announced three days later,
