HD Revanna, a JD(S) MLA, was granted bail by a Special Court for Elected Representatives on Monday in connection with a kidnapping case. Revanna, who is 66 years old, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 4 in relation to an alleged abduction case involving a woman linked to accusations of sexual abuse against his son, Prajwal Revanna, the MP from Hassan.
The special court judge, Santhosh Gajanan Bhat, granted Revanna conditional bail following a hearing on the matter. Revanna's three-day police custody ended on May 8, after which he was remanded to seven days' judicial custody until May 14.
The case stems from a complaint filed by the woman's son, alleging that his mother was sexually abused by Prajwal Revanna. The abduction, as per police sources, was purportedly to prevent the woman from testifying against Prajwal.
The SIT, which also arrested Revanna's associate, Sathish Babanna, has been investigating the case.
During the bail hearing, Revanna's counsel argued for his release, claiming a political conspiracy and a lack of evidence linking him to the abduction. They also questioned the invocation of certain sections by the SIT.
The SIT, however, argued that statements from the victim and her family, along with other evidence, substantiate their case against Revanna.
The court reserved its order and eventually granted bail to Revanna, who has been a prominent figure in Karnataka politics.
The scandal involving Prajwal Revanna, accused of multiple instances of sexual abuse, has stirred political tensions in the state, with demands for a thorough investigation and action against those responsible for circulating explicit videos.
