Bengaluru: Bengaluru topped the list of Indian cities that recorded the highest number of acid attacks against women in the country in 2022, according to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

As per the data, among the 19 metropolitan cities listed in the NCRB report, Bengaluru ranked first in the overall list with eight women becoming victims of acid attacks last year. While the city police registered six cases during that period.

Delhi at second position

Delhi stood second with seven women falling prey to the acid attacks in 2022 followed by Ahmedabad with registration of five such cases, the data showed.

However, an analysis of the NCRB data showed the Delhi Police registered seven acid attack attempt cases, whereas the Bengaluru Police only registered three acid attack attempt cases in 2022. Meanwhile, metropolitan cities like Hyderabad and Ahmedabad registered two such cases of attempted attacks in 2022.

Acid attack on 23-year-old woman in Bengaluru

One notable incident of an acid attack that rattled Bengaluru in the past year involved a 24-year-old M.Com graduate who was assaulted on April 28 while commuting to work. The police reported that the assailant had been stalking the woman for several years.

He approached her for marriage and when she rejected his proposal, he splashed acid on her. The man was nabbed later in May from Tiruvannamalai Ashram where he was allegedly hiding in the guise of a "Swami".

In June 2023, the victim was offered a job offer on a contractual basis from the office of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at his secretariat.

Another similar incident was reported on June 10, 2022, where a man allegedly threw acid on the face of his female friend after she rejected his marriage proposal.
