Giridih bridge collapse: A portion of an under-construction bridge over the Arga river collapsed and a pillar got tilted in heavy rain in Jharkhand's Giridih district today (June 30). The incident took place in Deori block, around 235 km from Jharkhand's capital Ranchi, on Saturday night. There was no report of any injury.

The bridge is being constructed on Fatehpur-Bhelwagati road to connect Dumritola and Karipahri villages. Executive Engineer of Road Construction Department, Giridih, Vinay Kumar told media, "The bridge is under construction. A single-span girder of the bridge collapsed due to heavy rain on Saturday night and a pillar got tilted. The contractor has been asked to rebuild the portion."

He, however, did not divulge the project cost of the bridge. According to sources the bridge is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 5 crore and it would connect the remote villages of Giridih in Jharkhand and Jamui district in Bihar.

Another engineer said that the casting on the girder was done a week ago and it needed at least 28 days to be strengthened.

Bridge collapse in Bihar

Another under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Madhubani district on Friday (June 28), making it the fifth such incident in the last 11 days. The latest incident has been reported from the Bheja police station area of Madhubani district, situated in the state's northern extreme, along the borders with Nepal.

Officials were tight-lipped about the incident, though sources in the Rural Works Department, which was entrusted with the construction of the 75-metre-long bridge, confirmed that one of the pillars got washed away a few days ago.

On Thursday, a part of the long girder collapsed between two pillars of this 77-meter-long bridge. To hide this negligence, the administration covered the broken part with plastic, so that people could not know about the bridge collapse.
