Ranchi: The Jharkhand CID has arrested two individuals suspected of trafficking people for cyber "slavery" in Southeast Asia, according to an official statement released on Thursday. The arrests, which took place on Wednesday, are part of an investigation into a scheme involving fraudulent job offers used to lure victims. These victims were then coerced into working in scam operations located in Laos and Cambodia.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Waseem Khan (29) from Giridih district and Yamuna Kumar Rana (29) from Koderma district, both in Jharkhand.
Luring victims for job opportunities
The CID took action following multiple complaints about deceptive job offers for data entry and other positions in Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. These complaints were filed with the Cyber Crime Police Station in Ranchi. "The two agents were operating in collusion with Indian and Chinese nationals based out of scam centres in Cambodia. These centres are notorious for exploiting individuals through investment frauds, part-time job frauds etc." the release said.
The CID conducted a thorough investigation by monitoring financial transactions and communication networks. They collaborated with the protector of emigrants and the regional passport office, which provided information on unregistered recruitment agents operating in Jharkhand.
Statements from victims trafficked to Cambodia provided detailed accounts of their exploitation in scam centres in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and Chiang Rai, Thailand. The investigation led to the arrest of two agents from Koderma and Giridih, with evidence linking them to the trafficking ring and their international associates.
Recovered items included passbooks, cheque books, mobile numbers, a laptop, a pen drive, and documents such as bio-data, passports, and visa details of individuals sent abroad.
