How did the accident happen?

Goods trains had derailed on the same section two days ago. Today, the passenger train, which was coming on the other track, collided with the derailed wagons. As a result, several coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail also derailed.

The accident occurred near pole number 219 on the Howrah-Mumbai railway line, close to Chakradharpur. Due to the incident, rail operations on the Tatanagar-Chakradharpur section of the South Eastern Railway have come to a complete halt. Many trains have been canceled as a result of the accident, while some are being rerouted to alternative paths.

What do officials say?

Chakradharpur Division Senior DCM Aditya Kumar Chaudhary has confirmed the accident.

According to the information, the Mumbai Mail, travelling from Howrah to Mumbai, arrived at Tatanagar at 2:37 am on Monday night instead of its scheduled 11:02 pm arrival. After a two-minute halt, it departed for its next station, Chakradharpur. However, before reaching Chakradharpur, the train met with an accident ahead of Barabamboo at 3:45 am.

The Mail Express collided with a goods train coming from the down line, resulting in 18 coaches of the Mail Express derailing and several coaches of the goods train being damaged. The severity of the accident is evident from the fact that many coaches of the Mail Express were severely crumpled and collided with each other due to the high speed.

Following the accident, relief trains have been dispatched from Tatanagar and Chakradharpur stations to the site. Additionally, a team from the engineering department has been sent to investigate the cause of the accident.

An investigation has been ordered into the rail accident. A team from the engineering department has also been dispatched to examine the incident.
