Terrorists fired upon an open tourist camp and injured two civilians on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. The civilians have been identified as a lady Farha and her spouse Tabrez. Both are residents of Japiur in Rajasthan. Taking swift action, the security forces cordoned off the area and evacuated the injured couple. They have been admitted to the hospital for further treatment.
The police official said that the incident took place at Yanner in Pahalgam tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district late on Saturday night.
In a separate incident, terrorists fired upon former Sarpanch from a close range in Shopian distrcit in south Kashmir on Saturday. According to the local police official, the injured former Sarpanch, identified as Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, was shot at in Hirpora in Shopian around 10.30 pm. He was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The attack comes just before the voting for the Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla. The voting in Baramulla is slated for May 20 in the fifth phase. Following record-breaking polling in Srinagar, it is anticipated that Baramulla and North Kashmir may witness an increased voter turnout.
Earlier on May 16, a major terrorist infiltration bid was foiled by the joint team of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police at the Line of Control (LOC) in the Tanghdhar area of Kupwara in North Kashmir. The security forces spotted four bodies of infiltrating terrorists on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
