Iltija Mufti, the daughter of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, on Friday was granted a regular passport with 10-year validity, said officials.
Iltija was issued a regular passport after over a month of her filing a new petition in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. In her petition, Iltija sought the court's intervention to extend the validity of her passport and remove any restrictions on her travel to any country.
Iltija granted regular passport
"The regional passport officer called Iltija to his office and handed over a regular passport with 10-year validity to her," an official said.
The 35-year-old Iltija, who wishes to pursue higher studies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), had earlier been issued a country-specific passport valid from April 5, 2023 to April 4, 2025.
In February, Iltija approached the high court to obtain a passport, as her initial application for the travel document was not approved. Her passport had expired on January 2, and she had applied for a new one in advance on June 8, 2022.
Mehbooba Mufti gets new passport
Earlier in June, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister was issued a passport after three years. The passport was given to Mehbooba following a prolonged legal battle in the Delhi High Court.
Her passport expired on May 31, 2019, and since then she had been seeking its renewal. It came barely two days ahead of a hearing in Jammu and Kashmir High Court where Menbooba's daughter Iltija's plea challenging the decision of the passport office to give her a country-specific passport is to come up.
