Baramulla: Just a few days ahead of the Baramulla Lok Sabha elections, a major terrorist infiltration bid was foiled by the security forces at the Line of Control (LOC) in the Tanghdhar area of Kupwara in North Kashmir. The infiltration attempt was thwarted by a joint team of the army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Four bodies of infiltrating terrorists have been spotted on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Search operation underway
Meanwhile, a search operation is underway in the area to locate more terrorists.
On receiving specific intelligence input, a joint search operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the general area of Amrohi, Tangdhar. During the search, two pistols, ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered.
Pakistani intruder arrested
Earlier on Tuesday, security forces arrested a Pakistani intruder from a village located near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, said officials on Tuesday. The Pakistani intruder was identified himself as Zahir Khan, a resident of Karachi.
He was arrested from Milan de Khui village near the LoC in the Pallanwala area of Khour on the outskirts of Jammu on Monday. The individual was observed behaving suspiciously by a police team and was subsequently escorted to the nearby police post.
Baramulla elections
This area of Kupwara, which is going to polls on May 20, falls under the Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency. Following record-breaking polling in Srinagar, it is anticipated that a higher voter turnout may be witnessed in Baramulla and North Kashmir, as well.
Baramulla is one of the Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. The state has six parliamentary seats. The Baramulla seat comprises 16 Assembly segments including Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Gurez, Bandipora, Sonawari, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg, and Pattan.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, People's Conference president Sajad Lone, PDP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Mir Fayaz, and former MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, who is currently in jail, are in the fray.
