Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended 'special congratulations' to voters of the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir for a record turnout. He said that it is a vibrant testament to their democratic spirit.

The constituency, which voted on May 25 in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, recorded a turnout of 54.84 per cent. The Kashmir Valley has witnessed robust participation of voters in the polls, with even areas traditionally associated with low polling witnessing a good turnout — marking a high in the last few decades.

'Special congratulations to my sisters and brothers'

In an X post PM Modi said, "A very special congratulations to my sisters and brothers of Anantnag-Rajouri for the record turnout in the Lok Sabha polls. Their enthusiastic participation is a vibrant testament to their democratic spirit."

Anantnag-Rajouri records highest voter turnout in last 40 years

The Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency on May 25 made history after it recorded its highest-ever voter turnout in the last 35 years, at 54.84 per cent in Lok Sabha elections 2024, the highest in 40 years.

With this, the three seats in the Kashmir valley -- Srinagar (38.49 per cent), Baramulla (59.1 per cent) and Anantnag-Rajouri (54.84 per cent) -- have recorded the highest voter turnouts "in many decades", the poll panel said.

This was the first major election in the Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution by the Centre in August 2019. The high voter turnout in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat was in sharp contrast to the poll percentage of 9 registered in the 2019 election.
