Kathua: Security forces have launched a massive search operation after detecting the suspicious movement of three persons, suspected to be terrorists, near the International Border in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. officials said on Sunday.
During the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, a Special Police Officer (SPO) reported the presence of suspicious individuals in Tarnah Nallah near Jangi Chak in the Hiranagar sector, the officials said.
Search operation underway
An immediate alert was issued across the entire area, including the border police post Sanyal, upon receiving the report. Reinforcements from the police, army, and BSF were swiftly mobilised to conduct a joint search and cordon operation.
As of the latest updates, search operations are ongoing in Tarnah Nallah and nearby villages, including Rakh Sarkar Palhi and Pathwal.
One dead, two injured in J-K's Anantnag and Shopian
Earlier on Saturday night, terrorists fired at two places in Kashmir, killing a former sarpanch in Shopian and injuring a tourist couple from Rajasthan in Anantnag, two days ahead of Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla.
The first attack took place on an open tourist camp near Pahalgam and the second on the former sarpanch at Hirpora in south Kashmir. In another attack, within half-an-hour, terrorists shot dead former sarpanch Aijaz Sheikh in Shopian's Hirpora around 10.
The areas in Anantnag and Shopian have been cordoned off and search operations have been launched to nab the attackers, the officials said.
The consecutive attacks occur amidst the ongoing campaigning for the parliamentary elections in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat. Polling for Baramulla is scheduled for May 20, marking the fifth round of the seven-phase general elections.
