Two terrorists were believed to be neutralised as security forces on Saturday (June 22) foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, the officials said. Army personnel noticed suspicious movement along the LoC in the Gohallan area of north Kashmir's Uri sector, they added. The infiltration attempt was foiled in the Gohallan area of north Kashmir's Uri sector, they added.

On being challenged, the terrorists opened fire, inviting a retaliation by the Army, the officials said. They said there was an exchange of fire for sometime which has now stopped. Two terrorists are believed to have been killed, but their bodies have not been recovered yet as the area is on the LoC, the officials said.

The Army is maintaining a tight cordon in the area and efforts are on to recover the bodies, they added.

Recent terror attacks in J-K

The region witnessed a spate of terror attacks starting June 9, in which 10 pilgrims, including a toddler, were killed by terrorists in Reasi as they attacked the passengers’ bus. Terrorists struck at four places in Reasi, Kathua and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir in four days, killing 10 pilgrims and a CRPF jawan and leaving seven security personnel and several others injured. Two Pakistani terrorists were also killed in an encounter with security forces in Kathua district and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

Notably, Pakistan-backed The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the terror attack in Reasi.

PM Modi's apparent warning to Pakistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (June 20) embarked on his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir after his victory in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 and took a firm message that the recent terror attacks in the region have been taken “very seriously” by the Centre. He assured the people of the Union Territory that the Centre “will not hesitate” to teach a lesson to the enemies of Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister’s remarks came in apparent reference to Pakistan.

“All of you are worthy of appreciation for the new energy. But the enemies of peace and humanity do not like the progress of Jammu and Kashmir. They are making last attempts to stop the development of Jammu and Kashmir, and stop the establishment of peace here. The government has taken the recent terror attacks very seriously. The Home Minister has reviewed everything with the local administration. I assure you that we will not hesitate to teach a lesson to the enemies of Jammu & Kashmir,” PM Modi said while addressing 'Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K' event in Srinagar.

“The new generation of Jammu and Kashmir will live only with permanent peace. We will further strengthen the path of development which Jammu and Kashmir has chosen,” the Prime Minister stressed.
