Baramulla Election Results 2024: Omar Abdullah suffers shocking defeat by Independent candidate

Baramulla Election Results 2024: In the last few Lok Sabha electoins, people in the Baramulla showed their supports for multiple parties - JKNC, JKPDP, Congress and JKPC. However, Omar Abdullah's JKNC's won the seat in 2019 and Mehbooba Mufit's JKPDP in 2014.

Baramulla Election Results 2024: Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency wintnessed a majour turnound as National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah was defeated by Independent candidate Sheikh Abdul Rashid. Rashid won the seat by over 1,88000 votes margin. 

Baramulla, one of the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, scripted history in the 18th Lok Sabha elections by witnessing record voter turnout. Out of 17,32,459 eligible electorate, a total of 10,07,636 voters (59 per cent) exercised their franchise in the constituency -- an all-time high since its establishment in 1967. The parliamentary seat is spread across 16 assembly segments of Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts and two segments of Budgam district. The Baramulla seat comprises 16 Assembly segments - Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Gurez, Bandipora, Sonawari, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Pattan and Delhiudhampurjammu. The Baramulla constituency is a General seat.

Baramulla underwent polling in the fight phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 20.

Baramulla Election 2024: Voter turnout

Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, which was once militancy-infested, recorded its highest-ever voter turnout on Monday at 59 per cent on a violence-free polling day. The Sopore assembly segment of the parliamentary constituency witnessed a healthy turnout of 44.36 per cent after recording single-digit polling percentages in the past couple of decades. The previous highest voter turnout in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency was witnessed in 1984 at 58.90 per cent.

  • Karnah 61.53 per cent,

  • Trehgam 61.17 per cent,

  • Uri 60.27 per cent,

  • Bandipora 60.24 per cent,

  • Beerwah 56.63 per cent,

  • Budgam 51.76 per cent,

  • Gulmarg 58.50 per cent,

  • Kupwara 58.90 per cent,

  • Lolab 58 per cent,

  • Pattan 59.87 per cent,

  • Rafiabad 57.39 per cent,

  • Baramulla 49.34 per cent

  • Wagoor-Kreeri 49.79 per cent.

Baramulla Election 2024: Date of results

The result for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency will be declared on June 4 along with the other 542 parliamentary constituencies of the country and assembly elections held in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

Baramulla Election 2024: Main parties and candidates

National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, People's Conference president Sajad Gani Lone and jailed head of Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid are among the key candidates in the fray for the seat.

Baramulla Election: What happened in 2014 and 2019? 

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Mohammad Akbar Lone defeated Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference Raja Aijaz Ali by a margin of 30,233 votes. Lone was polled 133,426 votes with a vote share of 29.00 per cent, while Ali got 103,193 votes with 22.63 per cent vote share. 

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Mehbooba Mufit's PDP candidate Muzaffar Hussain Baig won the seat defeating JKNC candidate Sharief Ud-din Shariq by a margin of 29,219 votes. Baig got 175,277 votes with a vote share of 37.61 per cent, while Shariq got 146,058 votes with a vote share 31.34 per cent.
