To observe World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024, we must know why it is important to maintain good menstrual hygiene. It is essential to ensure the overall health and well-being of a woman. It reduces the risk of Urinary Tract Infections, helps reduce the incidents of rashes in the genital area, helps ensure good reproductive health and also helps reduce the risk of cervical cancer.
According to Dr Astha Dayal, Lead Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, a variety of menstrual hygiene products are available to choose from according to your flow and comfort level. Whether you prefer pads, tampons, menstrual cups, or period panties, ensure that you change them regularly to prevent bacterial growth and odour.
Common tips to maintain good menstrual hygiene
Make sure you change your pad every four hours, even if your flow is light. Also, clean reusable pads properly and dry them fully before use. This prevents the buildup of bacteria and reduces the risk of infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and vaginitis. Also, never use two pads simultaneously. Menstrual cups are a safe inexpensive, reusable, eco-friendly option but one should clean them properly in boiling water after every period.
Dispose of used sanitary products properly. Wrap them in toilet paper or use disposal bags before discarding them in the trash. Avoid flushing sanitary products down the toilet as it can lead to blockages in the sewage system.
During menstruation, pay extra attention to genital hygiene, and wear comfortable, clean underwear. Clean the external genital area with mild, unscented soap and water regularly to prevent bacterial and fungal infections.
It is also important to stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet during this time. Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and salty foods, as they can exacerbate bloating and discomfort during menstruation. Have plenty of liquids to flush out toxins from the body which may alleviate menstrual cramps and bloating.
Getting enough sleep and managing stress can help reduce menstrual symptoms such as cramps and mood swings. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy. Gentle exercises such as walking, swimming, or yoga can also help alleviate menstrual discomfort.
