The recent heatwave that has been sweeping across the country has caused many people to suffer from a lost appetite. With temperatures soaring and the sun beating down relentlessly, it is no surprise that people are finding it difficult to eat.

High temperatures often suppress appetite due to factors such as increased sweating, dehydration, and decreased energy levels. Moreover, heat-induced discomfort may decrease the desire to eat, resulting in reduced food intake.

When we spoke to Dr Adi Rakesh Kumar, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Therapeutic Endoscopist & Endocrinologist, Yashodha Hospital, regarding the same, he said, "This lost appetite can be concerning for many individuals who are trying to maintain a healthy diet, as well as those with pre-existing health conditions that require a certain level of nutrition.

Body Responses:

During heatwaves, the body prioritises thermoregulation to maintain core temperature, diverting energy away from digestion. This shift in energy allocation can contribute to decreased hunger and reduced gastric motility, further impacting appetite.

Hydration Status:

Dehydration is a common consequence of heat waves, leading to electrolyte imbalances and decreased thirst perception. Adequate hydration is essential for appetite regulation, as water plays a vital role in digestive processes. Dehydration-induced thirst can be mistaken for hunger, leading to overeating or undereating.

Nutrient Losses:

Excessive sweating during heatwaves results in electrolyte and mineral losses, affecting nutrient balance in the body. Potassium, magnesium, and sodium are crucial for appetite regulation and metabolic function. Deficiencies in these electrolytes can disrupt appetite signals, necessitating replenishment through dietary sources.

How to Restore Appetite:

Despite the challenges posed by heatwaves, certain dietary strategies can help restore appetite and maintain nutritional balance:

Hydration: Prioritise fluid intake to prevent dehydration and support digestive function. Consume water, electrolyte-rich beverages, and hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Small, Frequent Meals: Opt for smaller, more frequent meals to ease digestion and minimize discomfort associated with heat-induced bloating. Include nutrient-dense foods like lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats to support energy levels.

Electrolyte Replenishment: Incorporate foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and sodium to replenish electrolyte losses. Bananas, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and coconut water are excellent sources of these essential minerals.

Foods: Choose cooling foods such as cucumbers, melons, and yoghurt to combat heat-induced inflammation and promote satiety. These foods are hydrating, refreshing, and gentle on the digestive system.

Avoid caffeine: Containing beverages, as they can exacerbate dehydration.

Mindful Eating: Practice mindful eating by paying attention to hunger and satiety cues, even when appetite is suppressed. Focus on enjoying meals in a calm, cool environment to enhance digestion and promote appetite.
