Ajay Singh Yadav, former Haryana minister, resigns from Congress, blames 'shabby treatment'

Ajay Singh Yadav said the decision to resign was really hard with whom his family had 70 years of association as his father late Rao Abhey Singh became MLA in 1952 and thereafter he continued with family tradition.

Ajay Singh Yadav, former Haryana minister, resigned from Congress on Thursday and said he had sent his resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. He said he has resigned from the position of chairman of the AICC OBC Department and from primary membership in Congress.

"I have sent my resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s ji from Chairman AICC OBC Department and also from primary membership of Indian national congress party @kharge @RahulGandhi @SoniaGandhiiINC," he said in a series pof posts on X. 

He went on to say that the decision to resign was really hard with whom his family had 70 years of association as his father late Rao Abhey Singh became MLA in 1952 and thereafter he continued with family tradition but disillusioned with the party high command for treating him shabbily after Sonia Gandhi left the post of congress President.

Notably, Captain Ajay Singh Yadav had won five consecutive Assembly elections from Haryana's Rewari in 1991, 1996, 2000, 2005 and 2009.

  • Captain Ajay Singh Yadav won the Rewari constituency in the 1991 Haryana Assembly elections for the first time by defeating Haryana Vikas Party's (HVP) Rajinder Singh by 25,824 votes.
  • Ajay Singh Yadav again won the Rewari constituency in the 1996 Haryana Assembly elections by defeating Independent candidate Randhir Singh Kapriwas by 1,767 votes.
  • He also won the Rewari seat for the third consecutive time in the 2000 Haryana Assembly elections when he defeated Independent candidate Vijay Somani by 4,924 votes.
  • Notably, Ajay Singh Yadav continued his winning streak in the 2005 Haryana Assembly polls when he defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Randhir Singh Kapriwas in Rewari by 12,779 votes.
  • He had retained the Rewari seat in the 2009 Haryana Assembly polls when he defeated Independent candidate Satish Yadav by 13,288 votes.

However, he lost the Rewari seat in the 2014 Haryana Assembly polls when he was finally defeated by BJP's Randhir Singh Kapriwas. He stood at the third position with 31,471 votes (20.54%).

In the 2019 Haryana Assembly polls, his son Chiranjeev Rao was the Congress candidate from the Rewari seat. He won the seat by defeating BJP's Sunil Kumar by just 1,317 votes. However, Chiranjeev was defeated by BJP's Laxman Singh Yadav by a huge margin of 28,769 votes in the just concluded Haryana Assembly polls 2024.

Yadav held several ministries, including Power, Forests, Environment, Irrigation, Public Works and Elections in the two successive governments led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda from 2005 to 2014.
