Two lionesses were caged after one of them attacked a 5-year-old girl who later succumbed to injuries in Gujarat's Amreli district, forest department official said.
The lioness attacked the girl when she was sleeping inside a hut in a farm. The victim's parents work as agricultural labourers at Halaria village.
According to reports, the lioness dragged the girl for some distance making her seriously injured.
After the attack, a manhunt was launched to nab the lionesses as the forest department set up cage to capture them.
After a search operation, the lionesses were later caged on Friday and Saturday and taken to Sakkarbaug zoo in neibhouring Junagadh district for further examination.
“While the girl was killed by only one lioness, we caged both of them as a precaution and took them to the zoo for examination of their scat (faecal samples).
The lioness that is suspected to have killed the girl is aged 4-6 years and was seen together with an older lioness in the area,” Patel said.
