Gujarat Weather: Extremely heavy rainfall to lash parts of state, Orange alert issued

Gujarat Weather: Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday and enquired about the flood-like situation in various parts of the state.

Gujarat Weather: Torrential rains have pounded several districts in Gujarat's south and Saurashtra regions in the last few days triggering a flood-like situation in urban areas and isolating villages. The rise in water levels in dams and rivers was also witnessed surging to the danger mark. As the monsoon is in the active phase, India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an 'Orange alert' for various parts of Gujarat and predicted extremely heavy rainfall on July 24. Thereafter heavy rainfall may continue at isolated places.

These districts can witness extremely heavy rainfall 

"At present, the monsoon is in the active phase... So under its influence, extremely heavy rainfall is already occurring over the state of Gujarat which will continue for the next 24 hours. Extremely heavy rainfall means more than 20 cm," said Dr Naresh Kumar, IMD Scientist. 

Abhimanyu Chauhan, IMD Scientist informed that during the next 24 hours, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch region. And some districts namely Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Valsad may receive extremely heavy rainfall also. 

Orange alert issued for various parts

Taking to twitter, the weather department issued Orange alert for the state. Earlier, IMD had issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch districts till Sunday morning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in many other districts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch during the next three days, the IMD said.

The IMD also warned fishermen to not venture along and off the north Gujarat coast from July 22 to July 26 saying squally weather conditions were very likely to prevail during this period. A red alert was issued for Junagadh, Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Kutch, Surat, Valsad, Navsari and Surat.

Amit Shah took cognisance of flood-like situation in Gujarat

Moreover, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday and enquired about the flood-like situation in various parts of the state.

"Spoke to Gujarat CM Shri @Bhupendrapbjp Ji about the flood-like situation occurring in various parts of the state due to the recent heavy rainfall. Also had a discussion with LG of Delhi, Shri VK Saxena Ji about the water level in the Yamuna river. Ample numbers of SDRF and NDRF teams are available to help the people in need," the home minister said on Twitter.
