A family outing at Dandi beach in Gujarat's Navsari district turned into a tragedy for a family, when four of its members, including a woman and her two sons, were swept away by the sea on Sunday. The missing persons have been identified as Sushila Gopalsinh Rajput (42), her sons Daksh (11) and Yuvraj (17), and her sister's daughter Durga (17).
According to Deputy Collector Janam Thakore, "Three persons were rescued by Home Guards while four others could not be saved as they were swept away into the sea before help could reach them." He further added, search efforts were immediately initiated with the assistance of the local fire brigade and police personnel.
Meanwhile, a relative of the Rajput family shared that they hailed from Bhilwara in Rajasthan but had settled in Khadsupa village in Navsari district. Speaking about the tragic incident, Parasmal Kumavat, a family member, stated that the group was enjoying their picnic on Navsari beach when tragedy struck. Despite efforts by Gopalsinh, the husband of Sushila Rajput, and subsequent assistance from Home Guards, they were unable to prevent the tragedy.
"The family was picnicking on the Navsari beach in the morning when four members were suddenly sucked into the sea. Gopalsinh (husband of Sushila Rajput) tried hard to save them. As he failed, he raised an alarm, following which Home Guards rushed to the spot, They also tried their best but failed," said Parasmal Kumavat.
It is pertinent to note that, earlier last year, in a similar kind of incident, a 27-year-old woman who was out on a picnic with her family drowned after a wave of water hit her. The tragedy struck her while she was taking selfie with her husband at Bandstand, Bandra, Mumbai.
After getting information about the incident, the fire brigade and police reached the spot and started searching for the woman but could not save her.
