Surat: An illegal immigrant from Bangladesh was arrested for posing as an Indian using forged documents from the state of West Bengal. The accused was found to have used an Aadhaar card, PAN card, and even travelled abroad using a passport based on a forged school certificate and is being investigated for potential anti-national activities.
Minar Sarhad, a Bangladeshi national posing as an Indian for the last four years, was apprehended by a special operation group (SOG) of Surat Police. The accused had allegedly changed his name to Shuvo Das to pose as a Hindu and procured fabricated documents from West Bengal. He had entered India illegally through the border in West Bengal in 2020 and later came to Surat.
After he was unable to arrange a fake Aadhaar and PAN cards in Surat, Minar Sarhad contacted an agent from West Bengal and first procured a fake school certificate from a government school in Purba Medinipur district. Based on the certificate, he also arranged a PAN card and Aadhaar card based on his residence in Surat.
After this process was completed, he also filed an application online for a passport, using which he briefly travelled and stayed in Qatar. He was arrested by Surat police two days ago and his original documents were recovered, which revealed his real name and place of origin. The case highlighted how illegal migrants were given forged Aadhaar and PAN cards in West Bengal.
Earlier, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested four Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly using forged documents to obtain Indian passports, said officials on Tuesday. The accused were living in different parts of Mumbai for a long time illegally with fake documents.
Based on a tip-off, the Juhu unit of the ATS recently arrested them. They had entered the country illegally several years ago. According to the ATS, the arrested Bangladeshi nationals were identified as Riyaz Hussain Shaikh (33), Sultan Siddhiaue Shaikh (54), Ibrahim Shafiulla Shaikh (44) and Faruque Usmangani Shaikh (39).
The official said that in the investigations ATS, it came to light that these Bangladeshis used forged documents stating they were residents of Gujarat's Surat to obtain Indian passports.
