Ahmedabad: Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration has busted a trade of fake medicines being circulated to treat serious diseases and arrested several people in connection with the matter while also confiscating large quantities of fake medicines in raids across the state, according to the officials.
A large batch of fake antibiotic medicines used for the treatment of serious diseases was recovered in Ahmedabad.
Some of those arrested worked as medical representatives of 'benami' companies and used to deliver the fake medicines to doctors, officials said.
“Based on the information received by the Food and Drug Administration, on October 21, POSMOX CV 625 (Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate with a batch of 99 boxes of Lactic Acid Bacillus Tablet) medicine was seized,” officials said.
An investigation revealed that these medicines were fake and were manufactured by DG Pharmaceuticals based in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh.
“But after talking to the Food and Drug Regulation of Himachal Pradesh, it was found out that there is no such company,” they said.
Details of the seizure
During interrogation, Khimaram told that he had purchased these medicines from Arun Kumar Amera of Ahmedabad. Interrogation with Arun Kumar revealed that the chain was rooted deep.
“Arun Kumar had bought these medicines from Vipul Degda, resident of Isanpur area of the city... When Vipul was raided, five different fake antibiotic medicines were found... These goods were also confiscated,” the officials said.
“Vipul said that Darshan Kumar had purchased these medicines from Praveen Chandra Vyas without any bill. However, Darshan denied this, after which further investigation was undertaken,” they added.
After checking Vipul’s mobile phone, it was found that he had supplied fake antibiotic medicines without bill to doctors and various medical stores in different cities of the state.
“Some of these people are working as medical representatives of benami companies, they used to supply fake antibiotic medicines to doctors... However, for more information, they have been arrested and handed over to Isanpur Police Station,” the officials said.
