The Gujarat government on Tuesday announced 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Class (OBC) in local polls by keeping quota for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes intact.
The Jhaveri Commission report was placed in the cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar on Tuesday, in which it was demanded that 27 per cent reservation be given to OBCs.
In fact, it was said in this report that in 9 districts and 61 talukas of Gujarat, the tribal population is more than 50 percent. In such a situation, there should be allocation of seats according to the population.
After this, cabinet minister Hrishikesh Patel said that the state government studied this report and then increased the OBC quota to 27 per cent. After this decision, a round of discussions has started in the political circles.
Local elections were last held in Gujarat in 2021 for 8,235 seats, with 237 seats having only one unopposed candidates.
The elections included six municipal corporations where elections took place in February — Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar – and one (Gandhinagar) in which the elections were held on October.
