Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Monday, August 28, 2023. The meeting will be attended by the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa, along with the Administrator of the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The meeting will also be attended by the Chief Secretaries, Advisors, and other senior officers of the state governments and union territories, the Union Home Secretary, Secretary Inter-State Council, and other senior officers of the central government.

The Western Zonal Council is one of the six zonal councils in India. It was established in 1956 to promote cooperation and coordination between the states and union territories in the Western region. The Council discusses and resolves issues related to interstate matters, such as water resources, border disputes, and crime.

The 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council is expected to discuss a number of issues, including:

  • The speedy investigation of cases of sexual offences and rape.
  • Matters related to infrastructure and the environment.
  • The implementation of the National Education Policy.
  • The promotion of tourism in the region.
  • The development of border areas.

The meeting is also expected to review the progress made on the decisions taken at the previous meetings of the Western Zonal Council.

The Narendra Modi government has been holding regular meetings of zonal councils as part of its strategy to strengthen cooperative and competitive federalism in India. These councils provide a forum for the states and Union territories to discuss issues affecting them and to share their best practices.
