Manipur violence: The Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led Manipur government, headed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh in wake of the violence that has gripped the state for three months. The party has two MLAs in the state Assembly.
Addressing a letter to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, KPA President Tongmang Haokip said, “After careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous."
Senior KPA leader WL Hangsing said that the party sent the letter to the Governor through email.
However, KPA pulling out of the alliance from the Manipur government will not affect the BJP-led government in Manipur.
Manipur govt MLAs tally after KPA pulling support
In the 60-member Assembly, the BJP on its own has 32 MLAs while the National People’s Party (7 members), Janata Dal-United (6), Naga People’s Front (5) and two Independent are supporting the saffron party-led government.
Who founded Kuki Peoples' Alliance?
The Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) is a state-level political party in Manipur. It was formed by former Indian Foreign Service officer Tongmang Haokip and Wilson L Hangshing on January 12, 2022.
The Kuki People's Alliance is mainly based on the interests of the Kuki tribe. The party has a vision document which includes taking up anti-corruption crusade, transparency in the electoral system by advocating free and fair election, commitment to pro-people governance, firm belief in secular ideals and social justice, rejection of VIP Culture and total rejection of Money and Gun culture not only at the time of election but in the course of administration and governance
Demand for separate state
10 MLAs, including seven BJP legislators, have been demanding separate administration (equivalent to separate state) for the tribals.
The BJP and various other organisations, including the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an apex body of the Meitei community, have been strongly opposing the separate administration demand.
