Kapil Sharma Birthday Special: A bumpy ride from winning a reality show to becoming ‘King of Comedy’

Ace comedian Kapil Sharma is celebrating his 38th birthday today and we can’t thank him enough for giving us our weekly dose of laughter. He successfully hosts The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony TV, which has returned to TV with its second season. Despite so many controversies, fights and fallouts, Kapil Sharma managed to keep his head above the water. In this murky world of transient fame and audience’s fickle memory, the comedian has carved a permanent place for himself. He’s here to stay, as the TRP charts for The Kapil Sharma Show say. On his birthday, let’s have a look at his erratic journey to fame and victory.

Kapil Sharma rose to fame after winning the comedy reality show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He took home the cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and above that, he became a household name for his spectacular comic timing. He went on to win the six seasons of Comedy Circus after which he started his career as a television host. He hosted dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 6 and another comedy show Chhote Miyan.

Kapil Sharma launched his own show Comedy Nights With Kapil under his home production banner K9 Productions on Colors TV.

Kapil Sharma became one of the very few comedians who made his way to popular talk show Koffee With Karan in season 4. After establishing himself as a successful TV host and a comedian, Kapil tried his luck in Bollywood with a comedy film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which did a record-breaking opening day business.

When everything was going right for the comedian, things turned nasty. His mid-air brawl with fellow comedian Sunil Grover earned him a bad name among his fans. Though he apologised for his mistake, Sunil’s die-hard fans were in no mood to let go of the incident. After Grover’s departure from the show, Kapil Sharma’s show found it hard to keep itself afloat.

Soon his limbo was followed by some bad decisions and inappropriate behaviour. Kapil Sharma started cancelling shoots, leaving many stars including superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and others waiting on the sets of The Kapil Sharma Show. As a result, the show went off air due to low TRP ratings.

As if this wasn’t enough, Kapil Sharma went into an infamous brawl with a renowned journalist. The latter leaked a call recording in which the comedian was heard abusing the journalist. Not able to cope up with his downfall, Kapil Sharma resorted to alcohol. He gained a lot of weight and hence stayed away from the cameras.

After spending some time at a rehabilitation centre, after being motivated by Twinkle Khanna’s book, Kapil Sharma returned to the television with Family Time with Kapil Sharma. The show was ended after only 3 episodes due to unknown reasons, low TRP ratings might be one of them.

It was after he tied the knot to his long-time girlfriend Ginni Chatrath that Kapil Sharma returned to his true form. He came back on television with The Kapil Sharma Show in December last year. The show is being bankrolled by superstar Salman Khan, who also supported him during his dark phase. The show is still running on Sony TV with many prominent celebrities coming on the stage to promote their films.

Going by his popularity as of now, Kapil Sharma is here to entertain the audience for years to come.
