The political-thriller Sarkar starring Vijay hit the screens on November 6 and it has opened to a thunderous response at Indian and as well as overseas box offices. The Tamil film has grossed Rs 32 cr on day one in Tamil Nadu which is a new record in the history of Tamil cinema. In Chennai city alone, the film crossed Rs 2.37cr on day one. Sarkar is the first Tamil film to gross more than 30cr in the state and 2cr in Chennai city on the first day.
Though the official figures are yet to be out, the film has earned over Rs 30 crore in Tamil Nadu on Day 1. In coimparsion, Prabhas's Baahubali had earned Rs 19 crore on Day 1. Not only this, it has become the highest grosser in Kerala as well with earning Rs 5.45 crore.
While Sarkar is easily the biggest release down south, in other parts of the country, too, it is expected to make a good amount of money. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter, “The hugely awaited #Tamil biggie #Sarkar, which opened today, has got fantastic showcasing outside Tamil Nadu as well… In Mumbai, for instance, the plexes have allotted 8, 9, even 11 and 12 shows every day, which is a rarity… The hype is truly tremendous… #SarkarDiwali.”
In the US, Sarkar has grossed $330K and in Australia, the film grossed A$215K from the premiere shows. In Kerala, Sarkar grossed 3cr from advance booking alone but the final day one number is awaited.
We also hear that the film took a grand opening in Karnataka, Telugu states and North India. Overall, early estimates say that Sarkar is said to have grossed more than 50 crore(approx) worldwide on day one.
