The first single of the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala is out. Titled Semma Weightu, the track is the perfect start to the Kaala album. It gives us a glimpse of Rajinikanth’s role as Kaala. The song’s groovy tune, the rapper verses and the hip-hop beats combine to give us a catchy, contemporary number. Directed by Kabali director Ranjith, Kaala is reportedly the story of a Mumbai-based don. But if the poster is something to go by, there is a hint of revolution in the story. Do we have another Baasha on hands? Does Kaarikalan turn to rowdyism to protect his people? Looks like it
The song has shades of Nerrupu Da but it’s a softer, milder version. Dressed in a signature black kurta, Rajinikanth is living up to his role as Kaala – the dreaded gangsta from Dharavi. With the song already clocking in 5 lakh views, it’s going to be quite a build-up to the grand audio launch on May 9th in Chennai.

Dhanush shared Kaala Semma Weightu track on social media with a caption that read, “Here we go :) Superstar’s #kaalaa first single #semmaweightu .. a @Music_Santhosh musical. It’s time to Rap with the darling of masses”.
Taking to Twitter, Dhanush shared Rajinikanth’s look for Kaala with a caption that read, “Here you go !! The king of style our Superstar’s “kaalaa” 2nd look”
A portion of the film was shot in Mumbai in the slums of Dharavi, again a throwback to the classic Baasha. A grand film set of the slum was erected in Chennai to shoot remaining portions of the film. Apart from Rajinikanth, the film has Huma Qureshi, Sakshi Agarwal, Nana Patekar and Pankaj Tripathi among others. Kaala also sees the return of the Kabali trio, Rajinikanth-Ranjith-Santhosh Narayanan.
Kaala is all set to hit the cinemas on June 7.
