In an apparent retort to Bihar Director General of Police Gupteshwar Pandey's statements vis-a-vis the probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Maharashtra government on Sunday said the state police was fully capable of unearthing the truth in the case. It also reiterated its known stand of continuing the probe by the state police and not handing it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as demanded by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and sections of Bollywood.
"The case is now being politicised for political gains. The Mumbai Police is investigating the matter thoroughly and it is capable of getting at the truth," Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said.
He added that even if the Bihar Police have registered an offence in Patna under Chapters 12, 13 of the Cr.PC, it has to be investigated by the police in whose jurisdiction the incident took place and the case must be tried in the courts here.
"The Mumbai Police are probing the said suicide matter. I strongly condemn the demands for handing it over to the CBI," said Deshmukh, who has earlier said at least four times that the case will only be probed by the state police.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has discussed the case status with both Deshmukh and also Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh amid the growing clamour to transfer the probe to the CBI.
Meanwhile, fresh reports have come out that Sushant's alleged girlfriend, against whom the actor's father KK Singh have registered a FIR in Patna, reportedly left her building along with her family members. Actress Rhea Chakraborty, who has been missing over the past few days, reportedly left her building in the middle of the night along with her family.
On July 31, a video of Rhea went viral, where she was seen addressing the allegations against over the death of her boyfriend Sushant. In the clip, she said: "I have an immense faith in God and the judiciary. I believe that I will get justice. Even though a lot of horrible things have been said about me in the electronic media, I will refrain from commenting on the advice of my lawyer as the matter is sub judice."
Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide case investigation gained momentum with Enforcement Directorate and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepping in. Talking to India TV, Bihar CM said that the state government is willing to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death if his family requests the state to do so. Sushant Singh Rajput's family had filed a cheating case against his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty in a 6-page long FIR.
With new revelations, twists and turns daily, the case has turned murkier and the demand for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has gained more strength. Not just fans, but many leaders from the political parties have also demanded a CBI probe in the case. After Sushant's father filed an FIR on Rhea Chakraborty accusing her of abetment to suicide, the actress reacted to the allegations on Friday and claimed that 'truth shall prevail." She also gave clarification about her viral video doing rounds on the internet in which she is seen talking about being a 'don' and controlling the boyfriend. Her reaction came after Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering case on the basis of a Bihar Police FIR.
The investigation has blown into a tug of war between the Bihar and the Mumbai Police. Actress Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showick's statements are yet to be recorded. "The Chief Minister will definitely act if demand for a CBI inquiry comes from the family of Rajput," said Bihar minister Sanjay Kumar Jha, who's a close aide of Nitish Kumar, according to PTI. Bihar Police visited Cooper Hospital seeking the actor's postmortem report.
