All families have their share of ups and downs and the Kapoor family is no different. ‘Kapoor and Sons’ is the story of a dysfunctional family, that always seems to be on the verge of exploding. Rahul (Fawad Khan) and Arjun (Sidharth Malhotra) are two estranged brothers. While the former is a successful author who gets all the required attention in the family, Arjun is a struggler and feels he is always viewed second to his sibling.

The duo is drawn to the family home after their grandfather Amarjeet (Rishi Kapoor) suffers a heart attack.  Their parents Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita ( a brilliant Ratna Pathak Shah) have their own differences, they can barely keep their temper in check. While living under one roof, secrets unravel and misunderstandings rock the family boat. As the story progresses, it takes you to familiar places that keep you hooked regardless of whether you like it or not.

The story could be a story of any family. On the surface, it may look ordinary but submerges you with its unique subtlety.

The script by Batra and Ayesha Dhillon probes certain unexplored aspects of human nature and offers several romantic, funny and emotional moments, that will touch a raw nerve.

Editor Shivkumar V Panicker has hardly left any moment that is not engaging. The whole 140 minutes will fly easy. Shakun Batra has succeeded in keeping things understated and never let the characters go overboard. Moreover, the nuanced writing has been greatly supported by top notch performances of the ensemble cast.

Fawad Khan , Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor have well crafted characters which they portray brilliantly.

When you have theatre veterans like Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor in a film backed by Dharma Production, you are bound to expect something amazing.

Alia, who plays the love interest of Sidharth, also excels as a free-spirited and fun-loving girl. Sidharth Malhotra, however, pales a touch in comparison because his character is less layered.

Rishi Kapoor in the role of a grandfather who has still not got enough of Mandakini’s famous bath scene from Ram Teri Ganga Maili is hilarious. His dirty sense of humour and potty jokes will have you in splits.

Verdict: Kapoor and sons have enough comic and dramatic energy to make it a great watch.
