Oscars 2014: Gravity wins five Oscars in technical categories

Los Angeles: Alfonso Cuaron won his first trophy at the 86th Academy awards in the film editing category for his 3D space drama "Gravity" which swept the Oscars in technical categories by taking home five early awards.


Cuaron, who is also up for the best picture and best director Oscar, shared his first trophy in the film editing category with Mark Sanger.

The film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, had a clean sweep when it came to the technical categories for bringing alive the beauty and terror of outer space in a magical way through 3D. "Gravity" was a winner for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki for his stunning camera work where he defeated films like "The Grand Master", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "Nebraska" and "Prisoners".

The film won in sound editing and mixing categories for Glenn Freemantle and Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead and Chris Munro. Visual Effects trophy too went to "Gravity" with Tim Webber, Chris Lawrence, Dave Shirk and Neil Corbould sharing the Oscar. The other technical trophies of the night were won by "The Great Gatsby", which had a cameo by Indian star Amitabh Bachchan.

"The Great Gatsby" won a trophy to Catherine Martin in the best costume design category while its other award came for production design. "Frozen" defeated "The Croods", "Despicable Me 2", "Ernest & Celestine" and "The Wind Rises" to score in the animated category.

"Dallas Buyers Club" took home the best make-up and hairstyling trophy. Best animated short film Oscar went to "Mr Hublot" while "Helium" was named best live action short film. "20 Feet from Stardom" was named the best documentary feature and best documentary short went to "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life".
