London, April 25: Asif Kapadia, Britain-based director of Indian origin, is developing a yet-to-be-titled documentary on late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. He will introduce the project to buyers at the upcoming Cannes International Film Festival.

Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, five years after rising to international fame with her "Back to Black" album.

James Gay-Rees, producer of Kapadia's "Senna", will produce the documentary through Playmaker Films, a new banner owned jointly by him and Kapadia. The film will be co-produced by Universal Music, reports variety.com.

"This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few films can," Kapadia and Gay-Rees said in a joint statement.

"Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone's attention; she wrote and sang from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle."

Kapadia also directed the 2001 feature "The Warrior", starring Indian actor Irrfan.

His new project will be part of the Focus Features slate at the Cannes film fest, which kickstarts May 15.
