When Shaheen Bhatt was asked to step away from sisters Alia and Pooja’s picture cause she was too 'dark’
Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen Bhatt came out with her story of depression in November 2016 through a long Instagram post. She not just talked about her struggle with depression but later also came out with her book titled 'Never Been (Un)Happier' and talked about her journey fighting body-shaming and racism. Recently, in an interview with Rajeev Masand, Shaheen touched upon the heart-breaking moments of her life once again and recalled an incident when she was asked to step out of the frame featuring sisters Alai Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt because she was not ‘cute enough’ or ‘fair’ like them.
During her conversation, Shaheen was asked about what she felt when the photographer asked her to step aside from her sisters for the picture and she revealed that it still breaks her heart. She said, "It’s making me unconformable right now as you are talking about it. You know, women, in general, suffer a lot….Shame I think is the core of depression and it could be any form of shame, and with women, I think body image also tends to be one of the causes for shame. Shame is central and I wish I could make people understand that shame is central to any kind of negative feelings, depression and sadness. It stops you from being vulnerable and you constantly fear that if you will show yourself as you are, you will be rejected by society. And my self-worth was definitely affected because I was at an age where the seeds of that were sown in me."
On the related note, Bollywood diva Alia Bhatt shares a very close bond with her sister Shaheen Bhatt. When her sister’s book unveiled, Alia took to her Instagram to share a video in which she got emotional talking about her sister’s journey and claimed how proud she was of her. Sharing the post, Alia Bhatt wrote, “Dear Shaheen.. Somehow when I finished reading your book I couldn't tell you how I felt immediately.. Cause I felt too much.. And I don't think I could ever discuss it with you properly.. I've tried now! Link in bio.. #NeverBeenUnhappier”
