Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja found place in Variety’s Women’s Impact Report 2019, sharing her name with likes of Monica Albuquerque and Michaela Coel. The official Twitter handle of Variety shared the news on March 7, ahead of International Women’s Day. Every year, the popular magazine releases their own Women’s Impact Report to honour the women who have made an impact in entertainment and lifestyle sector, both business and creative, around the world. This year, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor found a place in the list. Sonam retweeted Variety’s tweet and wrote, “Oh my god what an honour to be mentioned with these women!”
The report writes about Sonam Kapoor’s achievement in Bollywood film industry. It reads, “Last year, the busy Bollywood actress starred in women-empowerment comedy 'Veere di Wedding'; 'Padman', in which her character facilitates the journey of a man who makes it his life’s mission to provide affordable sanitary pads to rural Indian women; and 'Sanju', Bollywood’s highest grosser of the year. Already in 2019, she has starred in 'Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga', Bollywood’s first mainstream LGBTQIA film.”
“Labels and stereotypes are dangerous and detrimental and it has always been my endeavor to break them,” Sonam Kapoor Ahuja tells Variety.
“No effort is too small. Someday we are all just going to be memories and it’s my aim to be the best one I possibly can,” she adds.
Sonam Kapoor featured as a lesbian woman in the Shelly Chopra Dhar film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. She shared the screen space with her father Anil Kapoor in the romantic drama film. She is the first mainstream actress to essay such a role in a commercial film. Talking about future projects, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja will be next seen in The Zoya Factor which will hit the theatres in June this year.
