Ranveer Singh is currently basking in the success of Zoya Akhtar's directorial Gully Boy, which is based on Mumbai hip hop culture. The film, which also stars Alia Bhatt, is loosely based on rapper Divine and Naezy. Gully Boy was premiered at Berlin International Festival, where it opened to a thunderous response. The flick so far has minted Rs 32.50 in two days and is getting rave reviews from all the corners. Not only Bollywood, but even Hollywood stars are also impressed with the film. Fast and Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez and Pursuit of Happyness actor Will Smith heaped praises on Ranveer Singh and the film.
Ranveer too took to Instagram to respond to Will Smith's congratulatory message. The actor shared two Insta stories. ''Shoutout from the original rapper slash actor - BIG WILLY! RESPECT,” he wrote in the first. While in the second one, the caption read as “SALAAM TUMKO BADE BHAI! BOHT HARD.” For unversed, Will Smith recorded a special message for Ranveer and shared it on his Instagram. In the video message, he says, “Yo Ranveer congrats man I am loving what you’re doing with Gullyboy for me old school hip hop here seeing hip hop all over the world like that I am loving it man congrats.”
In Gully Boy, while Ranveer plays aspiring rapper Murad from Mumbai slums, Alia is his girlfriend Safeena, who is a medical student. Produced by Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby, Gully Boy also has Kalki Koechlin, Siddhanth Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz in important roles.
Earlier, in an interview with IANS, Ranveer had said, "It is the story which represents Mumbai in its true sense and the city is my home town, these are my people, this is my language so this is the story I am really attached to. It's an underdog story about a kid who broke through from great adversity in life to make it as a recording artist”
Unfortunately, Gully Boy got leaked just a few hours after its release. The notorious Tamilrockers leaked the movie online. However, whether this will impact the business or Gully Boy will continue its solid run, it is yet to be seen
