Legendary actor Raj Kapoor’s wife Krishna Kapoor passed away Monday morning after a cardiac arrest and Bollywood is in shock. The matriarch of the Kapoor Khandaan, she was the backbone of the family, binding it in a single thread. Just like Raj Kapoor, Krishna Kapoor has always been the guiding force for the family and was known for her elegance and fortitude. 

Krishna Malhotra married Raj Kapoor in May 1946. Her father was the maternal cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor. They had an arranged marriage when Raj Kapoor was 22 and she was just 16. Being shy and conservative, she never thought of facing the camera but selflessly supported Raj Kapoor throughout his career. Raj Kapoor’s had already established himself as the ‘showman of Indian Cinema’ before he married Krishna and it was difficult to ignore his multiple link-ups. However, it is said that Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor’s marriage was rock solid. Together they have 5 children- Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor and two daughters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain.

Rishi Kapoor in his book ‘Khullam Khulla’ also opened up about his father Raj Kapoor’s extramarital affairs and said that he was involved with Bollywood actresses Nargis and Vyjayanthimala which forced his mother to stay away from him. She came back only when Raj Kapoor closed that chapter of his life.

On the other hand, speaking about her parent’s relationship, Rima Jain once shared in an interview with Filmfare, “No matter what was said and written, Papa loved mother deeply. The truth is that all life he remained obsessed with her. He may not have expressed it to her the way she’d have liked him to. She may not have been a big part of his life. But whatever Raj Kapoor did, he came back home. His love for her was immense. He’d even press her legs and joke, ‘Raj Kapoor ka kya haal bana diya! Meri biwi mujhe pair dabane lagaa rahi hai. Ghar ki murgi dal barabar!’ He loved celebrating New Years because it also happened to be mom’s birthday.”

Even after Raj Kapoor's death in 1988, Krishna Kapoor received all the love and respect from her children and grandchildren. Her pictures with grandchildren Ranbir, Riddhima, Kareena and with the whole Kapoor Khandaan have frequently surfaced the internet.
