Hailing from a conservative Punjabi family, it was not so easy for Rati to opt acting as her career. She was not even allowed to choose acting as a profession. She fought a lot to pursue her dream career.
Rati did her schooling from a college in Madras, as her father was shifted to the city for work commitments. Fortunately, a Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja noticed her one day and promised to cast her in a film. This turned out to be turning point in Rati’s life.
The actress never looked back after that and continued to work in many South-Indian films. Rati made her debut in Bollywood in 1981 with Ek Duje Ke Liye, which was a remake of a Tamil film.
Rati’s received much applaud for her role in that film. Later, she also acted in Farz aur Kanoon (1982), Coolie (1983), Tawaif (1985) and Hukumat (1987), which are still remembered for her brilliant performances.
But after the death of Rati’s father, she decided to quit her career. Later, the diva tied the nuptial knot with businessman Anil Virwani. Rati also has a son named Tanuj Virwani.
