She was born in Pabna, Bangladesh to Karunamoy Dasgupta and Indira Devi. Suchitra married Dibanath Sen in 1947 and had one daughter, Moon Moon Sen.
After marriage in 1952, she made a career in Bengali films and then moved to Bollywood film industry. According to reports, her marriage was in trouble by her success in the film industry.
Suchitra's debut film Shesh Kothaay was never released. Then in the same year she worked opposite Uttam Kumar in Sharey Chuattor, a film by Nirmal Dey. The film was a hit.
