Sarangi maestro Ustad Sabri Khan dies at 88

New Delhi: Award-winning sarangi player Ustad Sabri Khan died of breathing problems at the age of 88.

The Padma Bhushan awardee passed away last night at a private hospital in Saket here, his son Ustad Kamal Sabri said.

"He had severe breathing problems. His health deteriorated because of cold weather. We admitted him to the hospital last night," Kamal told PTI.

He added that Khan had breathing problems for the past one year.

The musician's body will be buried tomorrow at the Mehndiyan graveyard here.

Hailing from the Sainia Gharana, he was initiated into Sarangi-playing by his grandfather, Ustad Haji Mohammed Khan, and later continued his training under his father Ustad Chajju Khan.

He was honoured with numerous awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Padma Shree award (1992) besides the Padma Bhushan (2006) for his contribution to the classical music.

Khan had performed in Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Japan, the erstwhile USSR, Russia, the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Mexico.

He had also played a duet with legend Yehudi Menuhin and had been a visiting professor to the University of Washington.
