New Delhi, June 18: Deepti Naval, the face of parallel films of and 80s, feels that today realistic cinema is more keen on entertaining the masses rather than dealing with sensitive issues diligently.

The 54-year-old actress, last seen in ‘Memories in March', is all set to make a comeback on the small screen with Colors show ‘Mukti Bandhan' and the ‘Angoor' star feels that television content has become stronger over the years.

“Today's realistic cinema is parallel new wave cinema with entertaining realism. But the films are more keen on entertaining because a lot of money is being spent on them. The realistic films are only going for comedy such as ‘Tere Bin Laden' and ‘Bheja Fry',” says Naval, who is also debuting as a director with her ‘Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish'.

“The content in our films used to portray sensitive issues superbly. Films like ‘Aradhna', ‘Sangam' and ‘Guide' have a set a mark and are still close to our hearts. But I feel that today's films like ‘Guzaarish', ‘Paa' and ‘Rajneeti' which term themselves as commercial are more sensitive to everyday issues,” says Naval.

The dusky actress, who was once married to director Prakash Jha, started her film career with ‘Junoon' in 1978 and went on to work in ‘Ek Baar Phir' (1980), ‘Chashme Baddoor' (1981), ‘Guddu' (1995) and many more.  But this year when her film ‘Memories in March' got unnoticed, Naval decided to make a comeback on the small screen with ‘Mukti Bandhan'.

“When I got a cold response after ‘Memories in March', I decided that I should move to television now. I want my work to be resonated and I feel that a character really grows on television.”

She even feels that the content has become strong in television from last couple of years.

“What used to be in cinema earlier like strong subjects reflecting the various problems in the society have now captured our television,” said Naval who has written, produced, directed and acted in a serial called ‘Thoda sa asmaan' in 1993 and acted in ‘Muqammal' in 2003.

Naval is also busy with things other than cinema. Her short story collection is round the corner and her poetry collection from all her wanderings over the year will release in October.

“My directorial venture ‘Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish' with Manisha Koirala is also ready for release,” says Naval. PTI
