New Delhi: Mahmood Farooqui, co-director of 2010 Bollywood film ‘Peepli Live' has been arrested by Delhi police on rape charges.
A case under IPC's Section 376 was registered against him and he was sent to a 6-day judicial custody.
According to reports, a US woman had filed a complaint against Mahmood on June 19 in South Delhi's New Friends Colony police station. He was arrested the next day and produced before a court.
The 35-year-old woman is a PhD student at Columbia University and had come to India for research. She alleged that Mahmood had invited her to a party on his house in Sukhdev Vihar on March 28 and he raped her.
Mahmood is the husband of the Peepli Live director Anusha Rizvi and also wrote the script for the film.
Mahmood is Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Oxford, Cambridge and Delhi's St Stephen's Colleges. He is an alumnus of prestigious Doon School.
Born in Gorakhpur, UP Mahmood is known for his book Besieged: voices from Delhi 1857. A noted researcher-historian and a writer, Mahmood helped writer William Dalrymple in the research of the accomplished ‘The Last Mughal'.
Nephew of noted Urdu poet and critic Shamsur Rahman Farooqi, Mahmood is famously known for Urdu art of story-telling called Dastangoi.
