New Delhi: Actress, filmmaker and social activist Nandita Das is facing huge flak for her alleged remark “all men are rapist” on Twitter. Some have criticized her for generalization of men and some (very few) have come out in her support.
Meanwhile, the 45-year-old diva clarified that she never said any such thing and was misquoted. “I'm being falsely quoted Never said all men are rapists. What kind of a stupid generalisation is that? sad that 1 have to even explain this,” she wrote on her Twitter account.
Tweets with hashtag #NanditaDasQuotes started when a picture of the actress along with the quote in question was uploaded on twitter.
Here are some of the tweets mocking Nandita for her comment.
"Every Nandita Dass is a potential Kamal R Khan #NanditaDasQuotes,” wrote a user.
“These are real life celebrities who make every Indian proud. Not pea-brain bollywood ladies #NanditaDasQuotes,” a tweet along with women army officers read.
Another tweet read, “Every hypocritical retard is a potential Nandita Das #NanditaDasQuotes”
“Are feminists the new anarchists? #NanditaDasQuotes,” a user termed Nandita an anarchist for her alleged statement.
“Oh man! Looks like Nandita Das committed social suicide! Or is it another publicity stunt? #NanditaDasQuotes,” a user tweeted.
Many came in her support too.
“@nanditadas I know you publicly since 1947 earth and more; I didn't believe a single tweet. Haters gonna hate, Tweeters gonna Tweet. Ignore,” a user tweeted.
Another user's tweet read, “Such a shame that #TwitterMentals have misquoted @nanditadas The #NanditaDasQuotes tweets could be as far from the truth as it could be!”
“The joys of tweeting in India! I wrote "paid a condolence visit". Got 10 replies like this:"So u were paid fr a condolence visit?Shame on u" Congress MP Shahsi Tharoor tweeted.
While all this was going on, no one really knew what she had said. Only a story on Time of India dating back to November 2013 could be found, where an excerpt read, “When asked her opinion about men these days, actress Nandita Das replied, "Every man is a potential rapist."
