New Delhi: Rani Mukerji starrer ‘Mardaani' hit the theatres yesterday and according to the latest reports, the film has collected Rs 8 cr on its opening day.
Mardaani managed collections in the range of 20-25 percent on an average, with Mumbai-Maharashtra being better. The film was released in around 1300 plus screens. While the morning show occupancy for Mardaani was decent, it could not pick up much in the evening and late evenings, hence resulting to poor collections.
It is expected that the crowd would increase by the weekend. The collections depend upon the critics' review and positive words of mouth. Critics praised Rani Mukerji's performance and her punches. Released in around 1300 theatres, ‘Mardaani' is expected to do well in metros than small cities.
In ‘Mardaani', Rani plays a fearless and daring police inspector Shivani Rao who leaves no stone unturned to bring back the teenage girl Pyaari who was kidnapped by underworld don. The film is about child trafficking, which is quite relevant today's scenario.
If we look at past, women centric films like Queen and Gulaab Gang, Mardaani has scored more on the opening day. It may be possible that slowly and steadily Mardaani will mark its strong presence.
Similar to Queen, Mardaani may too experience jump over the weekend as the word of mouth spreads. The film is on way to a super hit status, if not blockbuster.
Meanwhile Rohit Shetty's, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer, Singham Returns, dominated the box office collection and remains unaffected. It had stupendous opening week of around 112.59 crore. The film also beats Akshay Kumar starrer Holiday.
Here is the seven-day breakup of Singham Returns in India-
Fri 32.09 cr, Sat 21.05 cr, Sun 24.55 cr, Mon 14.78 cr, Tue 8.21 cr, Wed 6.44 cr, Thu 5.47 cr. Total: Rs 112.59 cr.
The other releases namely ‘Mad About Dance' and ‘Life Is Beautiful' have opened poor while the giant multi-starrer ‘Expendables 3' too but unexpectedly has got a poor opening at box office.
